Create A Space of Purpose & Peace
How do you feel about your “space”? Your space can be your home, your office, bedroom, wherever you have designated as your “hang out” spot. That is your space. When you look around your space, does it make you feel happy and at peace? Or does it make you feel frustrated, over whelmed and a little crazy? This month we are spending time setting ourselves up for success this year. One thing we need to do for this to happen is to set up our “space” for peace. When you walk into your space I want you to feel an overwhelming sense of calm and happiness.
How do we create a space of peace, you ask? It’s not about if everything matches or is perfect condition. To have peace, you space must be intentional and have a purpose. To have peace we need to get rid of the clutter and distractions that seem to creep into our spaces.
Here’s what you’re going to do…
Look at your space and determine it’s purpose.
Do you go to that space to unwind after work and relax? Maybe your space is a place where you can create. Maybe you want a space to do yoga. Whatever it is, determine the purpose of your space.
Declutter!
No matter what your space is going to be used for, clutter is not your friend. Clutter will make you feel overwhelmed, stressed and distracted. Unfortunately, clutter doesn’t just disappear, we have to deal with it. Here is my method for dealing with clutter. I grab a box (there always seems to be an amazon box i can get ahold of). Put your clutter in the box. Ta da! The space looks better already! Now that the clutter is in one, portable spot, take it to the nearest garbage can. Throw away everything that is trash. Then find a home for what is left in the box. Sometimes this is a quick activity and sometimes it takes the better part of a week. That’s okay! The important thing is to get it done.
Set up your space.
Now that the clutter is gone you can set up your space to best suit its purpose. Do you need storage containers or bookshelves? Do you need a table or desk to work on? Maybe you just need a clean floor and some green plants. Arrange your space so that it is functional for its designated purpose.
For me it was organizing the family to avoid collecting new clutter. In our playroom/schoolroom I had to rethink how I had things organized and stored away. I had to pull everything out of its old space and give it a new, smarter place to live. I now have a clean table to work or to create with my kiddos. The toys are organized, contained and hidden in their toy closet. In the family room, I can sit and watch a movie, play a board game, or read a book with my kids without seeing a mess I am itching to clean up. Below are some items I used to help me organize our space.
Prepping to create a space for intention and peace isn’t fun (unless you enjoy cleaning, which I don’t). But creating a space that not only brings you peace but is functional is worth it. I encourage you to do this for yourself. Maybe you do one room or maybe, like me, you want to work your way around the house making each room functional and more peaceful. Either way, stop ignoring the clutter and attack it. Set aside an afternoon. Make it a challenge. Turn on music or a podcast. And work at it until you are tired and happily satisfied.
Having spaces that are purposeful and peaceful will make what you want to do the rest of this year easier. You will have less distraction, less stress, less on your “to do” list and a place of peace that you will need, some days more than others.
Good luck creating your space!
