Live Well

Clean Slate

Although it is true you can start over any time you choose, there is something exciting about making changes at the start of a new year. Maybe it makes it a little easier to gauge your progress or the beginning of the year is a way to feel like you are celebrating the start of something, either way I believe everyone should use the new year as a clean slate. Whether you use it to let go of disappointments and hurt from the past year or to start something good for yourself, take advantage of the start of the new year.

Start the healthier lifestyle or new career.
Make time for the hobby you enjoy.
Read the stack of books sitting on the shelf.
Try that thing you’ve talked about being interested in.
Make the plan to save and travel.
Just make a plan and FOLLOW THROUGH!!!

I know it sounds good but no one ever sticks to their resolutions, right? Here are some tips to help you accomplish your goals and stick to the change that is going to make your life better.

  1. Make small goals. Want to start working out? Great! Don’t make yourself feel like you need to go everyday or you will soon feel like this change isn’t realistic. Try committing to working out 2 days a week. You will feel the benefits without the stress of feeling like you don’t have time or your body is too tired. Start small and if the change goes well and you want to add another day, wonderful! Want to eat healthier? Make healthier meals several days a week so you don’t feel like you are dieting or limited. Figure out what you like and give yourself wiggle room. Read more books? Start with one and maybe just a chapter a night. Traveling? Plan a few smaller, affordable trips or one bigger trip, rather than several big trips which may end up being unrealistic. The point is not to get burnt out. You want to enjoy these changes so don’t torture yourself.
  2. Share your goals with friends. This will help motivate you to stick with your goals. If they are asking about your progress (or even joining in) you are less likely to quit because you will have to fess up. Plus, unless your friend is the type to hold you back (don’t pick that friend), it can be more fun accomplishing your goals together.
  3. Reward yourself. When you accomplish a step towards your goal, celebrate! Again, making positive changes (although not always easy) should be a good thing. Make it as happy and fun as possible.
  4. Keep a journal. This is a great way to reflect and see how far you have come. Some people keep a food journal, a travel log, a book log, or just a record of your life events. Whatever you do, document it. Be proud of your journey, progress and setbacks, it’s all part of your story.
